Today, airports normally plan their future capacity demands in bottleneck areas based on planned passenger volumes. As capacity planning does not take unexpected events—such as changes in passenger appearances, lane productivity or the number of open lanes—into consideration, ensuring a premium passenger experience and maintaining a high operational performance can quickly become a difficult task. 

In order to adjust operational plans, improve passenger satisfaction, efficiently allocate staff resources and comply with airline service-level agreements, it is important that airport management are able to measure and predict passenger queue and dwell times.

Queue measurement is essential when evaluating key performance indicators and services delivered. Real-time queue measurement allows airport management to quickly react to unexpected changes—such as changes in passenger attendance or throughput—to improve operational performance and staffing.

Enter Blip Systems' Queue Diagnostics solution, which analyses all the key factors for queue development, such as real-time queue wait times, passenger forecasts vs actual, planned vs realized passenger capacity and production per lane. The accurate minute-by-minute insights provides a foundation of real-time information about the current operational status, unexpected changes and the effects of both. Providing a coherent live view of deviations enables immediate actions, such as adjusting on-the-day operational plans and allocating the necessary staff resources, to be initiated. In addition, the accurate wait times can be displayed on screens and mobile devices to reduce passenger frustration by creating realistic travel time expectations.

The solution enables the airport to provide optimum passenger service by displaying wait times on signs, websites and mobile applications, allowing passengers to reduce frustration by better utilizing wait times or selecting a faster-moving queue.

The solution works by combining and analyzing data from queue measurements, based on WiFi device detections and data from third-party sources, such as people counters and boarding pass scanners. The queue measurement data is collected, using sensors that detects devices in “discoverable” mode, found in mobile phones and tablets. When a device passes the sensors, it´s unique ID—called a MAC address—is recorded, encrypted and time-stamped. By re-identifying the device from multiple sensors, queue and travel times, dwell times and movement patterns become available. 


Ensuring passengers an efficient passage through the airport, significantly increases the opportunity for a positive passenger experience and enhances the likelihood of repeating travelers to the airport. In addition, the less time passengers spend in airport processes, the more they will enjoy a stress-free and pleasant transit experience in airport facilities, thus increasing non-aviation revenue.
