Microsoft Acquires Technology Assets From Unified Communications Specialist Event Zero

Microsoft has acquired technology assets underlying the UC Commander product suite from Australia-based unified communications specialist Event Zero to boost its Skype for Business’s analytics, reporting and management capabilities. The deal will enable Microsoft to expand and improve the built-in management tools for Skype for Business. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft has already confirmed the acquisition. Microsoft acquired only the technology assets underlying Event Zero’s UC Commander product, It did not buy the whole company. Event Zero will remain an independent company and still be doing business. Additionally, Microsoft declined to provide any information or roadmap around specific technology integration. 

Started in 2005 and based in Australia, Event Zero provides management and reporting software for Skype for Business Online. 

Zig Serafin, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Skype for Business, explained that Microsoft had bought the technology powering the UC Commander, the platform that powers Event Zero’s line of unified communication offerings, to add a strong diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities along with even more extensive reporting and analytics technologies for online audio, video conferencing, and media streams.

Microsoft intends to leverage Event Zero’s technology to enable IT administrators to better monitor and manage their Skype for Business setups. It plans to integrate Event Zero's UC Commander technology directly into Skype for Business to supplement its built-in management tools.

Zig Srafin, Corporate Vice President of Engineering for Microsoft Skype for Business, said in a statement: "This acquisition will allow us to expand and improve the built-in management tools for Skype for Business, and is the latest example of Microsoft’s commitment to deliver a complete, enterprise-grade communications solution at global scale with Office 365," and also added this: Event Zero will remain an independent company and "will continue to service its customers and partners." 

With Event Zero’s technology under its roof, Microsoft could now provide Skype enterprise users with a more streamlined experience and productive remote conversations. 

These past few months, Microsoft has been showing more focus on its Skype for Business, including launching an iOS and Android apps for the Skype for Business service and incorporating voice and meeting capabilities within Office 365 products. And today, the company is taking a huge move to improve the software's management experience for IT administrators tasked with keeping an eye on their Skype for Business environments, its acquiring Event Zero.
